Arizona Silent Service Memorial Officially Open at State Capitol

09 October, 20 / Community, Concrete, Project Spotlight

On September 28th, Sunland Asphalt and Construction (Sunland) celebrated the soft opening of a submarine memorial outside Arizona’s state Capitol in Phoenix, AZ to commemorate submarines and submariners lost at sea. This memorial honors more than 3,950 lives who served on submarines and the sacrifices they have made silently. The Arizona Silent Service Memorial Foundation has been working tirelessly for over six years to see this moment come to pass.

Sunland has been directly involved for the past year assisting with the overall management of the pre-construction phase. Prior to the submarine being installed at the Arizona state Capitol, Sunland crews completed all site work. The concrete foundation was built offsite by Sunland and then moved to Anthem. The submarine was constructed by Castle Steel and also transported to Anthem where the artist worked with concrete, steel, copper, and other materials to complete the memorial and accurately depict the submarine bursting out of the water in an emergency ascent.

The Memorial can now be visited by the public and will hold an official ribbon cutting on April 10th, 2020.
