Town of Gilbert Arterial Crack
Gilbert, Arizona
This project, completed for the Town of Gilbert, involved the allocation of fiscal year budget funds to perform crack sealing on several arterial roads. Crack sealing is a cost-effective pavement preservation technique that offers numerous benefits focused on extending the durability and performance of asphalt surfaces.
One of the key advantages of this method is its ability to prevent water from penetrating the underlying layers of the pavement. This proactive maintenance strategy helps reduce the frequency and cost of major repairs or full resurfacing that can result from water infiltration. Left untreated, water can cause significant damage such as potholes and erosion of the road base. By addressing cracks early, crack sealing helps maintain the structural integrity of the roadway and significantly prolongs its service life.
An especially interesting aspect of this project was the amount of material required to properly seal some of the cracks. In certain areas, it took two to three passes to ensure the sealant was level with the road surface. This highlights the effectiveness of preventive maintenance in addressing deeper or wider cracks and protecting the pavement from future damage.
